Evaluation

Design Aims

My design aims where:

  • To create a screen layout that was easy and clear to use  for all users
  • To ensure the screen was not cluttered and only the relevant information is displayed i.e. menu buttons and timetable details.
  • To create 4 page layouts
  • To apply these 4 layouts to 2 different screens i.e. a kiosk style touch screen and to a handle held mobile
  • To research screens, resolutions etc plus colour, typography and icons.

Planning targets

My targets are to:

  • Research screens, resolution, similar types of kiosks etc.
  • To experiment with typography, colour and icons
  • To two colour schemes and come up with a lo-fi prototype
  • To then take the results from Target Audience and design hi-fi prototype
  • Allow decisions to be made by the target audience

Testing

Include user testing data and your interpretation of it along with how it influenced your design thinking

The method Iused to evaluate my work was to directly ask people from the Target Audience what they thought and to rate each from 1-5. One being good and five being not so good. The one with the lowest mark is the TA’s choice.

Process

I feel the process I undertook was completed to the best to my ability and tried to meet all my targets above whilst following the guidelines given. I kept to my time schedule and allowed my target audience to make the necessary decisions, which led to the final outcome, shown on the hi-fi prototype page.

Problems

There were a few problems when experimenting with colour schemes as I hoped that some of the text would be able to show clearly on the colour selected for the background. I thought they would have but when created they did not have the same effect as hoped for.

Adaptability

I have changed my layout slightly in the fact that I have added an extra flash bar at the end of my hi-fi pages to let the user know that it is the end of the page. This was something that came up quite regularly when looking at other screens for research. I have created a design that can adapt to both small screens such a mobile phones and to large screens such as a touch screen at a kiosk. The design is the same for both screen types as this will allow users to use both type of screen easily there are no changes that make one complicated to use and one easy to use. This will allow a wider range of people to use the screens.

Skills/ knowledge gained:

  • To allow the target audience to make the decisions after all it is them that will be using the material.
  • I have learned to research similar products as this will allow me to come up with new ways to present my ideas/ designs.
  • My weakness would be layout. I did not experiment with layout as such but felt the layout presented fitted the brief given.
  • If given the chance I would also experiment with a background graphic to make the page look more interesting and appealing to the target audience.
